The Trump administration’s global charm offensive continues apace. On Wednesday, President Trump posted footage on his Truth Social platform of B2 stealth fighter jets dropping bombs to the soundtrack of “Bomb Iran,” a parody of the Beach Boys’ 1960’s song “Barbara Ann”, just days after imposing a fragile — or in the words of the former British diplomat Craig Murray, “phantom” — ceasefire on Iran and Israel. Trump also threatened to impose tariffs on Spain after the Pedro Sánchez government had the temerity to question the wisdom of tripling Spain’s defence spending over the next ten years before falling into…
Propublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates power abuse. Sign up for Dispatches. This is a newsletter that spotlights misconduct across the country, where you receive your stories in your inbox every week. The tumultuous country’s top disaster agency has caused unease among states and local emergency managers, leaving behind major questions about where the multi-billion dollar federal dollars are. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has yet to begin applications for huge grants, including those that many states rely on to pay for basic emergency management operations. Some states pass much of that money to the most rural and low-income…
Asset managers have it easy. The parties, the access, the spreadsheets. And the money isn’t bad. However, to keep the show on the road, there is the minor detail of winning and retaining clients. But what if you just bought them? While this isn’t exactly what private equity firms have done, neither is it completely not what they’ve done. As the Bank of England wrote in its latest Financial Stability Report:Historically, PE business models have relied on PE firms or financial sponsors (general partners) raising funding at arm’s length from investors (limited partners) such as insurers, pension schemes, and family offices.…
People sometimes ask me how economics is different from that of John Cochran. In a recent Cochrane post on Fed independence, I found a paragraph that shows how our views differ. Congress also gave the Fed a limited tool. The Fed can buy and sell securities and set interest rates. The Fed cannot print money directly and send it to people or businesses, nor confiscate the money. Doing so is much more powerful to control inflation than moving overnight interstrain, but only politically explainable institutions can tax or spend. Similarly, tax, labor regulations, and social programs exemptions affect far…
Buying a home is a big investment and it’s best to ensure that it’s in the best condition for any buyer, whether it’s your first home or an investment property. While general home inspections are almost always recommended for home buyers, savvy buyers will do due diligence by scheduling a professional home inspection, especially if the home is old or has specific features. So, whether you’re looking for a new home in San Diego or browsing a home for sale in Detroit, learn more about the different types of home inspections to consider. Do I need to have a professional…
Don Bowdrow, a professor of economics at George Mason University, gave me some excellent Zoom talk last week to the group I’m participating in, the Stanford Classical Liberals. One of the things I enjoy most about Don’s lectures is to have each point hissa with the load of relevant data. Another thing is the rare New Days, the perspective he brings to problems from his knowledge of economic history and history of economic thought. It appears in several places in his talk, especially with a Q&A that starts at 52:00 points. Don’s knowledge reminds us of the heart of the…
The first Domino fell into a Trump administration bid to loosen restrictions on Wall Street’s biggest banks. The Federal Reserve proposed changes on Wednesday that would reduce capital requirements for large US banks that have been implemented over several years following the 2008 financial crisis. Tweaks to these rules, known as the Enhanced Supplementary Leverage Ratio, allow the country’s most important banks, including club names Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo, to lend more freely and make U.S. government bonds easier to buy. The Fed currently wants to apply enhanced supplemental leverage ratios per bank, depending on the asset combination of…
