A recent Wall Street Journal story describes how storied diamond monopolist De Beers is in the process of trying to offload its former core diamond operation. Natural diamond sales and pricing have plunged due to the success of synthetic-diamond makers in making larger and larger stones. I looked at a manufactured diamonds deal in the early 1990s. Even the best producers then could fabricate only very small diamonds for industrial use, mainly abrasives. The Journal goes heavy on one reason for the change in consumer appetite, which is price, and lighter on the other, buyer awareness of the horrific conflicts…

Benefits of Custom Learning in 2025 Teams with dates many years ago, if their teams are still trained using one size eLearning modules, it may be time to rethink. With artificial intelligence (AI) tools becoming mainstream and compliance demands constantly evolving, ready-made content no longer fits that. Custom e-learning in 2025 is more than just a blessing. It is rapidly becoming essential to building a ready, enthusiastic, agile workforce for the future. From content libraries to feature builders Corporate training has traditionally focused on scale rather than specificity. It’s not uncommon to see the same video course or slide deck…
Tariffs, like any tax, cause deaths in the economy. Deadweight losses fall into two categories: the consumption effects of tariffs and the protective effects of tariffs. The consumption effect of tariffs is the lost profits from trade that occurred before tariffs, but now it is best noted that tariffs have raised the price of goods. In customs duties, people pay more and buy fewer units (or pay more for the same amount). Here at Econlog, we spend a lot of our time focusing on the consumption effects of tariffs. In fact, many reports (and claims) were about consumption effects. That…
