An Arizona man, his wife, and their 7-month-old daughter have won Redfin’s Great American Home Search, and the family now owns a $1 million home in Denver, Colorado.
To win the contest, which Redfin launched on Sunday, February 8, during the Super Bowl, Kiel Murphy of El Mirage, Arizona, solved clues within the Redfin app to find a $1 million home faster than anyone else in the country. Murphy completed the final step of the game and selected the correct Denver property within 19 seconds.
Redfin announced the family as the award recipient on Thursday in an Instagram and blog post.
“Keel and his family are starting a new chapter and putting down roots in the perfect community for them, and that’s what homeownership is all about,” Redfin Director of Real Estate Services Jason Aleem said in a statement. “I was shocked to see people from all over the country jump into the search, use their creativity to solve clues, and share the meaning of their neighbors. Thank you to everyone who participated. It showed us that the American Dream still resonates and is worth chasing.”
Redfin said Kiel and his wife, Meghan, love hiking and camping, making Denver the ideal location for their next home. The city is one of the sunniest cities in the country and has approximately 20,000 acres of parkland.
Redfin reports that more than 250,000 Americans participated in the contest, which began immediately after Sunday’s Super Bowl, Rocket and Redfin’s ad spots, and lasted for 48 hours. In addition to the physical home, the Murphys also received about $22,000 worth of appliances and furniture, about $700,000 in income tax assistance and about $25,000 worth of property taxes and homeowner’s insurance premiums for one year, Redfin said.
In an Instagram post announcing the winners, Redfin followers were introduced to Kiel and Meghan, who said they had moved around quite a bit, from Texas to Georgia to Arizona, in search of a forever home and a forever community.
The theme of the contest, and other recent advertising spots by Rocket and Redfin, was to highlight neighborly love as a modern and sometimes overlooked civic value.
Instagram posts show the couple enthusiastic about spending time in their new home, walking around the neighborhood with their daughter, meeting people and getting to know their neighbors in their new community.
“Redfin is giving us that community, and I think other people need to be able to experience that, too,” Meghan said.
