The wide range of public and investors have recently had similarities. They don’t have much love for either Tesla or CEO Elon Musk.
Tesla’s shares are under a withered sale, and CNBC All-America Economic Survey finds that over 47% of people have negative views of the company. Another 27% tested positive for electric car manufacturers, while 24% are neutral. This is compared to a third of the general who has a positive view of General Motors with a neutral of 51% and a negative of 10%.
Tesla is under pressure with concerns that the founder’s controversial political activity in cutting government jobs and supporting President Donald Trump and Republicans is alienating future buyers. The protests were born nationwide in Tesla’s offices.
Research revealed that Musk was a very polarized person. Half of the population has Musk’s negative views, but he sees him positively as 36% and 16% as neutral. Among Democrats, the net approval (positive minus minus) of masks is -82 and -49 for independents. GOP respondents are +56.
The biggest problem for Tesla is that many of the groups that are potential customers are far more positive about electric vehicles than about the company.
“The strongest Tesla is one of the least likely people to buy an EV,” said Micah Roberts, a partner at Public Opinion Strategies, a Republican poller in the survey.
Overall, 35% of Americans test negative for EV and 33% test positive. However, the men are +11 with net approval for EV, but are evenly divided by Tesla. Young people ages 18-34 are +19 in EVs, but -23 in Tesla. The gap is the toughest among Democrats, with +20 for EVs, but -74 for Tesla.
It further complicates the issue: Republicans are strongly positive in Tesla, but net-negative in EVs.
A survey of 1,000 people nationwide was conducted from April 9th to April 13th, with an error of +/- 3.1%.
