BEIJING—U.S. President Donald Trump invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on September 24, signaling that trade talks would extend beyond the two-day summit in Beijing this week.
President Trump announced the invitation at a state dinner Thursday night, according to a video shared by the White House.
According to state media, after the two presidents met on the same day, Mr. Xi said that the United States and China had agreed on “strategic stability” as a framework for the next three years.
Ryan Fedasiuk, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, said the main question that will determine the outcome of the summit will be determining “which deals the president is familiar with that he wants to make.” “Honestly, there’s going to be a lot left on the tree to ripen even more.”
China has not yet confirmed whether President Xi will accept the invitation to visit. The United Nations General Assembly is scheduled for early September in New York.
The two leaders may meet before or after the APEC meeting in Shenzhen in November and the G20 meeting in Florida in December.
