
The learning results may look good, but do they matter?
You may be proud of a learning program that has a 90% completion rate and 95% satisfaction, but it doesn’t prove that your learning strategy is a money-maker or a money-spender. Often it’s the latter.
Without a clear link between training and operational performance, such as efficiency, error reduction, and process implementation, learning remains a cost rather than an investment.
Completion rates and happy sheets don’t tell you whether your employees are able to apply new skills on the job or whether your training investments have delivered real business value. All they say is that people came and enjoyed it.
So how do you actually measure the effectiveness of your training? Which metrics matter? Is your LMS enough? When should you measure results to see real impact?

Despite good learning results, there was little improvement in operational performance. What did I do wrong?
At first glance, everything seemed fine. The process followed the familiar pattern of identifying a need, building a course, launching, and tracking completion.
But a closer look reveals the following:
No one asked what business problem this training was expected to solve. No business needs analysis was performed. No measurable business objectives are defined. Sales managers requested courses on product knowledge, but not on performance outcomes. There were no agreed metrics other than completion and satisfaction. L&D did not have access to operational performance data. After learners completed the course, there was no one to assess whether the new procedures were applied to their jobs.

Learning results you can be truly proud of
By now, it’s obvious. Even if your learning results show high completion rates and satisfaction, that’s nothing to be proud of. There’s no point in just collecting Happy Sheets.
Skipping deeper needs analysis, focusing only on completed metrics, blocking L&D from performance data, and ignoring alignment with business goals will have little real impact.
