BEIJING – Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao told reporters Friday that the United States and China can still find ways to cooperate, ahead of talks between the two countries’ presidents scheduled for Oct. 30.
“General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that dialogue and cooperation are the only right choice for China and the United States,” Wang said in Mandarin, as translated by CNBC. “China, as a responsible major power, has always opposed decoupling and ‘breaking the chains’. [while] Comply with global supply chain security and safety. ”
Wang said the two sides can find a way to address the issues they have with each other “based on mutual respect.” He added that the two countries “can find the right path to working together toward the healthy, stable and sustainable development of Sino-US relations.”
Although China has not yet formally acknowledged the meeting, the White House announced overnight that President Donald Trump and Mr. Xi are scheduled to meet next Thursday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in South Korea.

Commerce Minister Wang spoke on Friday at a press conference after the “Fourth Plenary Session” of a high-level meeting to discuss five-year development goals that ended on Thursday.
