Propublica announced on Tuesday that Chris Alcantara has joined the graphics team as a graphics editor. In this role, Alcantara develops, designs and builds charts, maps, data visualizations, and visual stories.
Alcantara comes to Propublica from the Washington Post. There, he was a graphics reporter for almost a decade, publishing ambitious data visualizations and interactives, covering a variety of national and global news. He also built reporting tools and programs to help gather and analyze data, leading the production of data pipelines for the US presidential and midterm elections and the Olympics.
Prior to the post, Alcantara was an interactive news developer for the Miami Herald, creating interactive stories and data-driven graphics as part of a three-person visual team, and providing data reporting to the newspaper’s research team.
“We couldn’t be excited to have Chris on the graphics team,” said Graphics Director Lena Groger. “Chris brings us over a decade of experience creating data visualizations that clarify complex topics and reveal important findings through visual storytelling. We can’t wait to get started.”
“Propublica does a valuable job,” said Alcantara. “We are grateful for the opportunity to join our team and would like to provide visual storytelling for our newsroom research.”
