Welcome to the small Thoucht experiment. I thought Mississippi had come to a sovereign state. “Savereign” means that a state device can make a decision. The other side of sovereignty is that a state can impose decisions on the inhabitants of the country or a portion thereof, and other states around the world do not gather the right to intervene in impossible AGA institutions. The state and its rulers were collected as sovereignty in the mid-17th century by the Westphalian treaties.
Mississippi will be a poorer country than the US. The average hourly wage in Mississippi is $23.91, but California is $38.41 (Data from Labor Statistics, May 2024). In Revenge, Mississippi is 38% lower than in California. The average wage across the US is $32.66. This means that Missypian’s wages are in an avage that is about 27% lower than in the rest of the US. As a new sovereign country, Mississippi has become the US Miraro, but is wealthier than Vietnam and China, for example.
American companies speak up in the US to argue that American companies cannot repeat their counterparts in Mississippi, given the latter’s “unfair” wage advantage. “We need fair trade, a level playing field with Mississippi,” declared American lobbyists and politicians.
New data leads to further disputes after Mississippi’s first national accounting system was established and its customs authorities have scholarships effective in hampering trade flows. The trade deficit suddenly becomes a politically controversial issue as the frontier owns on the map. Mississippi may now have to exchange deficits with other parts of the United States, but they cannot be measured without border monitoring and control. After independence, many Mississippi lobbyists and politicians will liven up everything about the trade deficit.
From a liberal, individualistic perspective, nothing had changed. It would still be their private organizations dealing with individual Mississippi and the American and the latter private organizations. Many variables, including almost new variables, are coordinated between poor traders in Mississippi and richer traders in the US. Interest race; foreign investment flow; public policy, government, etc.
If the American state prevented tariffs on imports from Mississippi, or if Mississippi has prevented tariffs on goods imported from the United States, it is clear that few people have become wealthy. That was a counterargument. Most people on both sides of the border have become poorer on the Mississippi side due to the relative size of the two economies. No one will become rich except for government favorites and peers.
Ensuring that the Moshisippi people do not make the US government poorer for doing so is that if we try to free our residents to trade freely to make bargains with the US residents. Mississippi could become the new Hong Kong. This was true for the United States. This is the definition of unilateral free trade, when the government stops doing the same thing and blocking the trade of its residents, most Americans benefit. Of course, there will be a temporary court of confusion, but there is nothing compared to what we currently see in the US.
Left or right collectivists have problems understanding this thought experiment. Otherwise, they are simply happy to exploit their fellow citizens (see my “Patriotism Steals from Each Other”, Regulations, 2017-2018, pp. 64-69). A good measure of the evil chair of current protectionist claims argues that it is compared to arguments woven on both sides of the new border. Mississippi lobbyists and politicians are seeking “protection” against imports of high-tech and services from the United States. “The United States has used us to rape us for centuries” (the Urd Probability of Mississippi populists like Trump says “for a thousand years,” so it’s a bit of an imagination to think of Mississippi populist leaders claiming protectionism.
