When it comes to car and traffic safety awareness in schools, the Georgia Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Keep Georgia Safe program really stands out.
We chose Keep Georgia Safe for our teacher candidates because it is comprehensive, interactive, and meets the needs of both teachers and students in a fun and meaningful way. Here’s a quick look at some of the highlights you’ll find on the website GARoadSafety.com and some of the teacher resources included in this program.
Interactive games: Fun and engaging activities that teach road safety concepts. Lesson Plans: Ready-to-use materials tailored for middle school and high school classrooms. Posters: Eye-catching visuals to raise safety awareness in and around schools. Video: Informative and engaging content that reinforces safety messages. Kahoot Quizzes: Interactive quizzes that test student knowledge in a playful way.
These materials not only align with educational goals, but also keep students interested and engaged. To see how it would work in a real classroom, we asked middle school and high school teacher Emily Wilde to put the Keep Georgia Safe program to the test. Here is her honest review.
How have you used the Keep Georgia Safe materials in your classroom?
We spent the week doing lessons and mini-projects. I also liked the distracted driving game. After utilizing the available lessons on inertia and velocity, students worked in pairs and selected one of three projects. They can create their own PSA on safe driving, write letters to their leaders and design their own roundabouts.
What did you like most about being a teacher?
I liked the easy-to-understand layout of the lesson plans. It was very easy to understand. I also loved variety. My students couldn’t believe I was encouraging them to play video games during class. Everyone had a lot of fun.
What did the students like most about the road safety materials?
My students really loved the game about distracted driving. One student told me how frustrated he was that his passenger kept doing things that made driving difficult. Another student said, “That’s the point!”
The students were very enthusiastic about the material because the material was directly applicable to their own lives. As they engage with the driver community, my students spend time thinking about things like the science behind why safe driving habits are so important and the steps they can take in their own lives. I liked it. I loved hearing the thoughtful conversations that came up as they worked together.
How has this made your job as a teacher easier?
The layout of the lesson plan made it very easy to work with. Not only were the instructions clear, but they also specified time, materials, prep work, and objectives required. These materials provided everything I needed to teach my students about safe driving at a critical time in their lives.
How will you use Keep Georgia Safe materials in the future?
After they finished their assignments for my class, we added driving video games to the list of “okay to try” activities. I will definitely use this lesson every year!
