The home of New Jersey’s best cream donuts is up for sale.
McMillan’s Bakery in Haddon Township’s Westmont neighborhood is listed on Loopnet for $1.3 million. The two-story building at 15 Haddon Avenue also includes an apartment on the second floor. It is unclear why the building is now up for sale or whether the bakery will remain open after the sale. Attempts to reach the owner Monday were unsuccessful. The store is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Opened in 1939, McMillan’s is one of the state’s most famous neighborhood bakeries. It’s simple and homey, yet full of amazing baked goods.

At the top of the list are the best cream donuts, made with puffed cream filling sprinkled with powdered sugar. Whatever you do, don’t eat that donut in your car. Your seat will be covered in powdered sugar, like when I recently visited.
Longtime owner Arlene Biemiller’s parents opened the bakery in 1939. Beamiller, who passed away in 2023, was also a gracious host (and avid birdwatcher) when we stopped by the bakery in 2017 for New Jersey’s Best Bakery Showdown.

She drove alone to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and when her grandson, who was a Marine stationed at the base at the time, asked if he could drop off some cream donuts during his visit, she ordered 250 cream donuts. I loved telling the story of when I dropped the.
So how much cream is in each cream donut? “As much as I need,” she replied with a smile.
But McMillan’s has always been more than just cream donuts. Cakes, cookies, pies, muffins, danishes, cinnamon buns, and more filled the shelves.
Unsurprisingly, McMillan’s made the list of 62 of the state’s best bakeries and 37 of New Jersey’s best donut shops.
The reaction from local residents and business owners was swift and disappointing.
“They’ve been there forever,” said Vincenzo Barone, owner of Bricco Coal Fired Pizza in Westmont, one of the 10 finalists in New Jersey’s Best Pizza Shop showdown. . “I had a cider donut there, and I think it was fresh out of the fryer. It was the best I’ve ever had.”
