MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A resource fair was held in Madison on Saturday specifically aimed at area immigrant and refugee families.
The fourth annual Immigrant Resource Fair was an opportunity for families to learn about the support available in their communities and connect with local organizations.
Fabiola Hamdan is the Immigration Affairs Supervisor for the Dane County Human Services Department. She says the fair introduces people to important resources they might never have discovered otherwise.
“When you move to another country, where you’re not just a newcomer, you don’t know the language, you don’t know the resources, you don’t know the laws, it’s important for you to integrate yourself into that community,” she said.
The event featured everything from educational resources to food assistance to law enforcement introducing themselves to the community. An immigration lawyer answered my questions.
“This really helps people navigate their immigration status,” Hamdan said. “We also run workshops for asylum seekers, and because immigration is a bit complicated, we also run workshops for people to know their rights.”
The fair was sponsored by the Office of Immigration, Community Immigration Law Center, Centro Hispano, and UW-Madison.
