Washington family back in business after goods truck stolen in Federal Way

LACEY, Wash. – An Olympia family-owned business is returning to Lacey’s Haunted Night Market for the first time after thieves destroyed the store earlier in the Halloween season.
A rented U-Haul containing merchandise, a tent and display shelves was stolen from the parking lot of the La Quinta Inn in Federal Way just a few weeks ago while the man was asleep.
The Andersons say they were happy to be back at the Haunted Night Market on Friday after being robbed by thieves in Federal Way.
“I almost quit, but the coordinator really encouraged me,” said Elizabeth Anderson, owner of Cut Out Creations PNW.
The ghouls stole the rental truck and took most of the merchandise, but the Anderson family refused to give up on the ghost.
“There were days when we just let everything come at us, and then we had to make a choice,” Elizabeth said. “The day after the theft, we were using the card to board our flights.”
Liz said they had picked themselves up and helped the community “develop” a plan to return to the market.
“There’s not a lot of sleep and there’s a lot of work,” Elizabeth said.
“The kids helped out late at night, and we even had coordinators from other shows come in and do the pinning,” Wes Anderson said.
“All the racks, tents, everything was donated to us,” Liz said. “I had an empty bag for printing, so I printed it yesterday.”
Wes estimates that he placed about 3,500 pins on the board in just two weeks.
“Normally we have 12 boards, I think we have seven boards, so we’re not at full capacity, but we’re getting to full capacity,” Wes said.
Now that the business is back from the dead, Elizabeth and Wes are grateful for the sentiment in Booty from those who donated and the ghosts and goblins who bought merchandise at the festival.
“These people are showing us that we don’t have to win, we have a community, and we’ll get back to where we were,” Elizabeth said. “You probably feel that way about a hit like this at Walmart, but for guys like us, that’s what life is all about, so it’s important to shop small.”
If your family couldn’t make it to the market on Friday night and you’d like to support them, families will be at Tacoma’s Haunted Farmers Market on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
