RAPIDS CITY, South Dakota (KOTA) – Old McDonald Farm is located on Highway 16 northeast of Lockerville. This area, located approximately halfway between Rapid City and Mount Rushmore, is a popular area for tourists in the summer.
Owner Thane Rose said: “We just rely on people driving by and wanting to stop and say ‘hello’ or pet the animals. We charge a fee. So, that’s what we can afford.”
Rose has owned Old MacDonald Farm for over 10 years. Rose, who grew up on a farm, said it’s a business close to home.
“I love seeing people who don’t know much about animals being close to animals and appreciating them,” Rose commented.
Outside of the summer tourist season, Rose changes her strategy. Every Saturday in October is part of Old McDonald Farm’s Fall Festival days. You can stop by at a discounted price on this day.
During the winter, animals spend their time in seclusion.
“I have a small ranch south of town, so all the animals have a lot of room to be animals,” Rose said.
