A five-year, $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs will support Project REAL, which stands for Preparing Responsive and Effective Advocate Leaders in EI/ECSE.
“Project REAL addresses the need for culturally sensitive special education teachers and leaders with integrated knowledge and skills in early childhood social-emotional research, effective educational practices, and policy implementation.” said Dr. Xu, a professor in the department. Counseling and Special Education in VCU’s College of Education. Her research interests and expertise focus on social aspects of children and students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
From 2024 to 2029, Project REAL will graduate 10 Ph.D. The candidates, five part-time and five full-time, will be trained in research, teaching, and policy implementation through continuing professional development in EI/ECSE policy. This project builds on VCU’s existing Ph.D. The special education program is designed to prepare researchers who are ready to serve in leadership positions at universities, research centers, state departments of education, or other educational institutions and government agencies in the field of special education.
This project features four features. One is to ensure equal access to candidates from historically underrepresented groups. Engage academics in community settings with a high need to serve children and families of diverse backgrounds. Offer a series of internships and facilitate faculty-related experiences. Strengthen the ability of scholars to present and publish their research.
“We are so proud of Dr. Hsu for his tireless efforts to positively impact early intervention and special education,” said Dr. Kathleen Rudashill, interim dean of the School of Education. “This Human Resources Preparation grant showcases VCU’s high-quality research and training opportunities for future professionals and demonstrates our commitment to inclusive education.”
