Tips for Writing a Perfect Thank-You Note
Thank-you notes are sometimes the only way teachers know what students or parents thought of a school year or a class. The best ones are heartfelt, honest, and acknowledge the wonderful—and challenging—times you had together. Use these tips to write a thank-you letter for a teacher that will end up in their forever file.
Share a favorite memory. What is a memory that you still laugh about or smile over? Share that memory in your letter.
Think about what you learned. Every teacher hopes you’ll take a skill or new knowledge with you into the next year. List one thing that you improved at or one way you grew as a learner.
Imagine what you will remember from their class in 5 or 10 years. Will you be talking about a favorite read-aloud or an event from history in the future? Let the teacher know.
Share silly or humorous moments. Chances are, your teacher finds the same mishaps or memories funny as well.
As a parent, what did you appreciate? If you’re writing a thank-you note from the parent perspective, it’s OK to be honest. Did you appreciate how the teacher handled your energetic student with patience? Did you notice how the teacher went out of their way for your struggling reader? Mention your appreciation for those special efforts.
Express gratitude. A simple thank-you goes a long way, so don’t worry about having the longest letter. Just reading that a student appreciated being in our class each day is amazing!
