42 North Dental found it increasingly difficult to operate, plagued by high staff turnover, compliance efforts, and siled training hubs. However, in healthcare, the patient comes first. So how can organizations overcome these challenges while still providing quality care?

The Challenge: Transforming Training for Quality Patient Care
Running a dental clinic requires a lot of rotating wheels for a dentist. Especially if you are trained in healthcare rather than business management. This is where 42 North Dental comes into play. The organization has more than 40 years of experience helping dentists do what they love: providing quality patient care without the administrative burden.
42 North Dental exists to help dentists do what they do best: provide quality care to their patients. This organization is then responsible for all support functions, including recruitment, training and development, payroll, and facilities. That’s a lot of moving parts for a staff of 1,600 people.
Before TalentLMS, training was siled. Each department had its own training materials, and sometimes materials. None of them were very scalable or shareable. Systematic learning for new hires was limited, compliance requirements were difficult to track across the business, and career development took a backseat. result? The turnover rate remains at around 40%.
In the medical field, this kind of turnover doesn’t just mean hiring costs. It impacts the quality of patient care and the stability of any practice. 42 North Dental needed a way to organize training, make it consistent, and give people a clear path forward.
Until I arrived at 42 North Dental, my training was in small pockets. Each department had its own training materials. Even if the material was available, it wasn’t very scalable or shareable. Through TalentLMS, we’ve created a repository for all of our training, bringing all of our training content together and creating a vast library of quality materials for everyone in our organization. — Randy Schumacher, Director of Learning and Development, 42 North Dental
One platform for compliance, onboarding, and career growth
Schumacher turned to TalentLMS to bring his training out of the dark ages. Leveraging a modern training platform, we created a one-stop learning hub for everyone, encouraged career development, and significantly reduced employee turnover.
What are the three areas where TalentLMS has made the biggest difference? Compliance, onboarding, and career development.
In regulated industries like healthcare, compliance training is not required. In the medical and dental industry, there is a lot of compliance-related training that doctors and hygienists must complete. Using TalentLMS, Schumacher has set up courses that healthcare providers can complete on their own schedules without interrupting patient care.
Next was onboarding. Rather than relying on individual practices to train every new employee from scratch, 42 North Dental built a consistent onboarding program with TalentLMS. As a result, each practice now saves 35 hours per new hire because the foundational training is already built and ready to start.
But the biggest change was career development. Schumacher has created learning paths that encourage employees to grow within the organization. One of the first programs they developed was a front desk training program. Staff can take structured courses on 42U, our own branded TalentLMS portal, to move into management roles. And that’s exactly what happened. Over the past three years, three people who started out as front desk staff have become regional managers.
Three areas where TalentLMS really helped me. Number one is compliance. In the medical and dental industry, there is a lot of compliance-related training that doctors and hygienists must complete. The second is learning and development. We have created many programs to help people develop their careers. And finally, onboarding all new employees. Our industry has very high turnover and we are constantly training new employees. — Randy Schumacher, Director of Learning and Development, 42 North Dental
Benefits of Training 42 North Dental brought to you by TalentLMS
Centralized training hub: A unified online training program saved 10,500 hours, resulting in significant cost savings. Ongoing compliance: Healthcare providers certify (and recertify) compliance with strict healthcare industry regulations. Streamlined onboarding: By relying less on individual practices to onboard new employees, we saved 35 hours per practice per new employee. Reduced employee turnover: Training focused on career development increased employee retention and reduced turnover from 40% to 25%. Easy course building: The platform’s visual format made it easy to build courses from start to finish. Lauren Gillis, who works on course creation at 42 North Dental, found TalentLMS to be both a brainstorming tool and a course builder, all in one place.
Using TalentLMS is very easy and straightforward. This format is very visual and can be used mostly to build an outline, fill in blanks, fill in gaps, and build on what you have as you work. This helps you from brainstorming all the way to the final build. — Lauren Gillis, Learning Development Specialist, 42 North Dental
Training programs that promote growth throughout the organization
42 North Dental started by solving real problems: distributed training, difficult compliance management, and high turnover. What they’ve built with TalentLMS doesn’t just solve those problems;
Today, 1,600 learners across the organization have access to 322 courses covering compliance, onboarding, and professional development. New employees can settle into the job faster. Healthcare providers remain focused on patient care. And employees who want to grow their careers have a clear path to doing so.
The numbers speak for themselves. More than 10,500 labor hours were saved, with 35 hours saved per practice for every new employee. Sales decreased from 40% to 25%. And the industry recognition to back it up: 42 North Dental received both the Training Trailblazer Award and the Great Results Award.
What TalentLMS has done for our organization allows our physicians and hygienists to focus on quality care. For Schumacher, that’s what a training program should look like. Rather than a side project or compliance checkbox, it is a core part of how an organization supports its employees and patients.
Thanks to TalentLMS, the last job of my entire career turned out to be the best job ever. And I would like to personally thank TalentLMS for making it so easy and so much fun. — Randy Schumacher, Director of Learning and Development, 42 North Dental
