It may no longer be a popular building or house style, but when designing your living space, you can draw inspiration from Art Deco. Redfin has called on some design experts for creative ways for homeowners and tenants to incorporate Art Deco interior design. This is what they had to say.
What is Art Deco design?
“Art Deco is rooted in balance, symmetry and bold expression,” says Brent Hunter of Archinard. “We draw from its diverse inspiration, whether it’s a fireplace or an appliance, not just as a functional feature, but as an opportunity to bring cohesiveness and character to the space.”
“Art Deco interiors effortlessly evoke the elegance of a Grand Hotel in Paris, the charm of Miami’s oceanfront and the timeless charm of Old Hollywood,” adds Elblonde’s Laura Dawson. “For those inspired by travel, velvet textures, marble details and soft gold finishes bring a curated, well-traveled feel.
1. Add metallic accents and statement pieces
“Art Deco is about bold geometry, rich materials, clean and streamlined shapes, and a sense of charm and luxury. “For tenants, statement mirrors in bold geometric shapes, metal accents such as gold or silver, or velvet throws pillows in gemstone tones to guide its iconic vibe without committing lasting changes.”

Some interior design styles follow a “lesser” approach and are essentially more minimalistic. The opposite is true when it comes to Art Deco interior design. To truly grasp the essence of this style, accessories and accent pieces are essential.
“Art Deco is a very current trend in interiors,” says Steve Mishner, from Mishner Azurdia. “It evokes an old Hollywood vibe through its elegant shapes and materials. This can be achieved. You can switch key lighting rooms in the Entry or Powder Room between powder rooms with sculptural sconces in aged brass or frosted glass.

However, incorporating this style does not need to mean a complete overhaul. As Rochelle points out, a small addition enough to change the space to embody the elegance of Art Deco interior design is enough.
“Let’s start the smallest with a snippet of a statement. Carving lamps, velvet throw pillows with jewel tones, or gold trimmed mirrors can add instant elegance,” she says. “Looking for furniture and decorations with sharp angles, fan motifs, or black and brass details, capture that signature Art Deco vibe. Renters can lean on peel and stick wallpaper with geometric designs or swap out hardware for a more luxurious finish.”
6. Meet your unique personal style
There is no set playbook when it comes to Art Deco interior design. There are many ways to introduce elements of this style to your entire home. The key is to find out what is being told to you and what you feel. Perfect for your space.

Try out different combinations to see what resonates most with your tastes and the feeling you want to create in your space.
7. Add gorgeous talent to your windows
When it comes to interior design, windows can be overlooked, but it should not be. There are many ways to incorporate Art Deco design elements around the window.
“Art Deco is about bold luxury,” says Juliet Delabia, who covers the windows on the Skyline. “When it comes to window treatments, the latest trends feature elegant curtains in rich fabrics like velvet and silk. The drape hardware makes a statement with gold and brass finishes.”
8. Leaning towards the concept of geometric design
“Many of our readers are leaning towards Art Deco’s bold geometry and luxurious finishes,” says JWC Media’s John. “Incorporating this aesthetic is as easy as adding a black and gold accent, lacquered surface, or a rich colour palette of emerald, sapphire and onyx. Whether it’s a downtown apartment or a North Shore Estate, several decon-inspired elements add instant characters and timeless talent.”

9. Don’t add an architectural touch for fear of being bold
“To bring Art Deco’s signature glamour into your home, replace it with a small: geometric throw pillow, velvet cushion, or a bold brass mirror for immediate deco drama and warmth,” says Rachel Waldron, Waldron’s design. “Lighting centers on terrestrial or step-like fixtures that reflect a love of style for sparkle and geometry, like a chrome tray or a carved lamp with fine details.”
You might make small tweaks at first, but they are perfect for Art Deco interior design. Homeowners can move further distances and make more architectural changes to maximize Art Deco’s interior design.
“If you’re dreaming bigger, the architectural touch can have lasting impact,” adds Waldron. “Think about adding a dramatic entrance with low relief decorative panels for bold, symmetrical door surround or unmistakable deco welcome. Smooth wall finishes such as painted plaster and stucco, horizontal windows, and even playful porthole windows can guide the streamlined elegance of the era.”
